Sri Rayapati Sambasiva Rao (64 years) is a versatile parliamentarian, dynamic politician, sagacious businessman, illustrious educationist and devoted social worker. Wife : Leela Kumari, blessed with one son and 2 daughters.
Born on 7th June, 1943 in Ungutur Village, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India, in a farmers family, Sambasiva Rao graduated (B.Sc.,) from Osmania University. He has a meteoric rise in politics and business. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Indian Parliament) from 1982 to 1988, member of the 11th Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian Parliament) from 1996-98, 12th Lok Sabha from 1998 to 99 and 14th Lok Sabha since 2004 on wards. He has been Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources since 2004. He was Chairman (with Cabinet Minister rank) of the committee for implementation of the 20 point programme in 1991 - 94. The was a member of several Parliamentary Standing Committees and consultative committees and Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam.
Sri Sambasiva Rao has been actively associated with the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). He was the Treasurer of the APCC in 1985 and General Secretary in 1988.
He is deeply involved in tobacco cultivation and trade. He is the Chairman of the reputed Jayalakshmi Group of Companies leading exporters of Tobacco and Jayalakshmi Spinning Mills Limited, Guntur. He is the recipient of President of India’s Merit Certificate for best performance in tobacco exports. He was Vice-Chairman of the Tobacco Board for two terms.
Sri Sambasiva Rao is closely associated with Nagarjuna Educational Society which managers a chain of reputed educational institutions including the RVR Engineering College, Law College, College of Education, and a degree college.
He is a patron of literature and fine arts and several cultural organizations. He is a member of the Guntur Club, Andhra Social and Cultural Association, Chennai, Race club in Chennai. He is Philanthropist and has a penchant for social and community service especially for the economic amelioration of the downtrodden.
